Why It Matters

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Lower Zambezi is an IBA (Important Bird Area) with 300+ species. Highlights include African Pitta (Dec–Jan rainy season), Narina Trogon, African Fish Eagle, carmine bee-eaters and dozens of kingfisher species. The lodge is open year-round, giving access to rare wet-season species other lodges miss.
Open-vehicle drives into the Chiawa GMA and Lower Zambezi National Park. Available morning, afternoon and evening (with spotlights for night drives). Guides with 50+ combined years of experience in the valley. Excellent predator sightings — leopard, lion and wild dog are regular.
Guided bush walks with an armed scout. Focus on tracking, spoor, plants and smaller wildlife often missed from a vehicle. Guides are mostly born and raised in the valley. Snakes, birds, and predators are all fair targets for observation.
Visits to the Chiawa Cultural Village to meet the Goba community, see traditional performance arts and crafts, experience Zambian cuisine and learn about life in the Lower Zambezi GMA.
Royal's officially named in-camp relaxation concept. Hang by the infinity pool, read in the library, use the spa, watch elephants from your day-bed or sit at the Sausage Tree Bar. The wildlife comes to you — bull elephants have been known to walk within trunk-reach of guest suites.
Seasonal hikes (May–August only) up the dramatic Zambezi Valley Escarpment behind the lodge. Routes range from gentle to challenging. Views at the top are panoramic. Armed scout and guide accompany; porters available. Vehicle pickup can be arranged for the return.
Downstream river canoe trips in two-person crafts guided through narrow channels and floodplains. No prior experience required. Wildlife approaches closely — buffalo on the banks, elephants crossing, crocs and hippos nearby. Best in the afternoon for photography light.
Outboard-powered boat cruises at any time from morning to evening. Rich birdlife on the banks, crocodile sightings, pods of hippos, elephant herds crossing the river. Sundowners on a Zambezi sandbar with boules available. Refreshments included.
Catch-and-release fishing for the legendary tiger fish (Hydrocynus vittatus — grows up to 10–12kg) on fully equipped aluminium boats with expert guides. Also bream, vundu, chessa, cornish jack and nkupi. Best September–November for tiger fish. Guides, fuel and tackle provided; serious anglers should bring their own gear.
