RYOTEI HANZUIRYO
Traditional ultra-luxury ryokan. Showa-era aesthetics layered over classical Japanese craftsmanship — tatami floors, lacquerware, paper-screened garden windows, koi ponds, moss-laden paths. No contemporary minimalism here; this place leans into old-world Japan with total conviction.

Why It Matters
Holds a 2025 Michelin 1 Key (and previously the highest lodging rating of 5 Red Pavilions in 2019) plus a Michelin Star for its kaiseki cuisine. Only 14 rooms on a vast estate — the smallest standard villa is 250 m², which puts even Aman properties to shame. Buildings were individually crafted over two years by a single Miyadaiku carpenter from Kyoto. The sulfur onsen is drawn directly from the Unzen-Jigoku volcanic fields.
Ryotei Hanzuiryo is Japan's rare kind of perfect — a 14-villa ryokan occupying 16,500 square meters of ancient forest and manicured garden on the slopes of Mount Unzen, inside Japan's first designated national park. Every building is a detached sukiya-style structure hand-crafted by a Kyoto Miyadaiku carpenter, and the kitchen holds a Michelin Star. This is the top of the Unzen accommodation pyramid, priced accordingly.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The forested estate attracts local bird species. Guests in rooms close to the east onsen bath (such as the Fuyo/Hibiscus villa) report excellent birdwatching directly from their rooms.
Stroll 16,500 m² of Japanese gardens, koi ponds, moss-covered stone paths, and ancient forest. The grounds are frequently wrapped in mist at dawn and dusk, especially atmospheric in autumn or early morning.
Staff can organize hiking excursions into the surrounding Unzen-Amakusa National Park terrain. Arrange with the concierge.
The famous volcanic hot spring fields are a 10-minute walk from the property. A surreal landscape of steaming fumaroles, sulfur vents, and bubbling pools set against dense forest.
