of Palmar, Mauritius
Maximalist eco-boutique. Bold Walala color and geometry meets barefoot-beachside ease. Design-forward without being precious about it. Culturally curious crowd, couples and honeymooners.

Why It Matters
Design Hotels' first member property in Mauritius. The only hotel on the island with a Himalayan salt inhalation room. Camille Walala-designed interiors are genuinely one-of-a-kind. The 'Skill Swap' program — where guests trade talents with local artisans — is the most distinctive community-rooted hospitality concept on the island.
SALT of Palmar is a 59-room, adults-only (16+) boutique hotel on the east coast of Mauritius, opened in 2018. Set on a small peninsula on Quatre Coco beach, the property was designed by local architect Jean-François Adam and decorated by London-based artist Camille Walala — whose bold geometric patterns, cobalt blues, fiery oranges, and candy stripes cover everything from cushions to pool chairs. This is not a standard beach resort. The whole philosophy pushes guests to actually explore Mauritius: skill swaps with local potters and fishermen, dawn fishing trips, guided hikes, cooking classes with the chefs. The food is genuinely excellent — no buffet, only made-to-order dishes using produce the kitchen team sources from farmers it knows by name. Four-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide.
