Saltus
Wabi-sabi eco-luxury. Raw natural materials meet serious design intent. Calm, intentional, and genuinely quiet — this is not a party hotel. The vibe rewards slow travelers who actually want to use the wellness programme.

Why It Matters
One of the first eco-hotels in the San Genesio area, listed by Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Michelin, Tablet Hotels, and Gault Millau. The property sits on the largest interconnected larch meadow plateau in Europe, and its Forest Spa is 99% chemical-free, integrated directly into the spruce forest. Daily yoga, forest bathing, and meditation are included in the room rate — no extra charge.
Hotel Saltus is a fourth-generation, family-run eco-hotel that opened in its current form in 2019 at 1,100 metres above sea level on Europe's largest larch plateau, just 8 km from Bolzano. The Mumelter women — sisters Nadja and Claudia, plus their mother Hedwig — rebuilt the property around one idea: that the forest itself is the therapy. Rooms are built from local larch, porphyry stone, organic clay, and limestone; the aesthetic is minimal but warm. The rooftop 18-metre infinity Sky Pool with panoramic Dolomites views and the underground Forest Spa woven into the spruce trees are the two centrepiece draws.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Daily group yoga sessions taught by co-owner Hedwig Mumelter in a dedicated yoga room amid the fir trees. Top-of-the-range equipment (mats, blocks, belts, pillows) provided. The hotel also hosts occasional yoga retreats with outside teachers.
E-bikes available for rent at the hotel. Guests use them for excursions on the plateau and surrounding mountain roads.
Over 800 km of marked hiking trails accessible directly from the hotel across the Monzoccolo/Tschögglberg plateau and the wider Salten area — the largest interconnecting larch meadows in Europe. The hotel provides a dedicated hiking corner with an extensive library, weather stations, maps, route suggestions, hiking sticks, rucksacks, and snowshoes for winter.
Horse riding on the Salten plateau. Multiple riding stables in the area around the hotel offer guided horseback excursions.
Occasional healthy cooking classes offered as part of the relaxation and wellness programme.
Designated jogging routes through the larch forest and surrounding plateau.
Guided meditation classes offered by the spa team as part of the daily relaxation programme. Included with the stay.
Guided group relaxation technique session, part of the inclusive daily programme.
The hotel hosts a rotating artist-in-residence programme (Saltus Sinafisi), bringing contemporary artists to live and work at the property. Exhibitions open to guests during their stay. Recent residents include Lena Henke and Evy Jokhova.
Guided barefoot walks through the larch forest, led by Hedwig Mumelter. Based on the Japanese practice of strengthening the mind-body connection with nature through sensory awareness. Guests are guided to listen for birdsong, feel the texture of bark, and inhale forest air consciously. Included in the room rate.
Watercolour painting sessions offered as part of the relaxation programme — one of the more unusual inclusions. Part of a broader arts and creative programme at the hotel.
