Why It Matters
One of California's most storied hotels. The Kennedys honeymooned here in 1953. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier married on the grounds. John Huston finished writing The African Queen screenplay during a stay. Owner Ty Warner has spent more than two decades curating antiques and art for the property. The Stonehouse Restaurant holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award and a Michelin recognition. A 15,500-bottle wine cellar includes one of the largest restaurant offerings of Château Pétrus in the US.
San Ysidro Ranch sits on 550 acres in the Montecito foothills, about 90 miles north of Los Angeles. The 38 individually decorated, vine-covered cottages are genuinely private — each has a gated entrance, its own fireplace, sunken outdoor hot tub, and rainfall shower. Rates start around $2,495 a night and include all meals at the award-winning restaurants (alcohol excluded), with no resort fees. It's expensive, yes. But the all-inclusive dining and no-nickel-and-diming policy make it more straightforward than many properties at this tier.

Where John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned in 1953. Hand-carved stone cottage with a gated entrance opening onto a large landscaped courtyard with antique bench seating. Each of the two bedrooms has a four-poster king canopy bed, old-world fireplace, and 65" HD TV. Bathrooms offer freestanding clawfoot tubs, radiant heated floors, Bvlgari-style amenities, and luxury Italian linens.
