Sanbona
Conservation-led luxury safari. Remote, raw Karoo landscape with serious wildlife credentials — Big Five plus ultra-rare white lions. Each lodge has its own distinct character: romantic cave-like tented camp, farmhouse-chic family retreat, or Cape Georgian manor house.
Book the early 12:30 transfer arrival to maximize your first afternoon game drive — the 16:00 arrival means you miss it.
Why It Matters
One of only two places in the world where white lions roam freely. Malaria-free Big Five reserve just 3.5 hours from Cape Town. Owned by a non-profit — every guest dollar funds conservation. San rock art sites dating back over 3,500 years. Unique sunset boat safari on Bellair Dam.
Sanbona is one of South Africa's largest privately-owned nature reserves — 62,000 hectares of Little Karoo wilderness about 3.5 hours from Cape Town along Route 62. It's not one lodge but three distinct properties: Dwyka Tented Lodge for couples, Gondwana Family Lodge for families, and the stately Tilney Manor for those who want colonial-style grandeur. Every rand you spend goes straight into conservation, since the reserve is now owned and operated by the non-profit CALEO Foundation.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 200 bird species recorded on the reserve. Can be incorporated into game drives and guided walks, or pursued as a dedicated activity.
Guided open-vehicle drives at sunrise and sunset through 62,000 hectares covering two biomes — Succulent Karoo and Fynbos. Big Five spotting with the genuine chance of seeing white lions, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, and lion. Sundowner drinks served at sunset; coffee and tea at sunrise. Drives last up to 3 hours. Children under 4 not permitted.
Unique sunrise or sunset boat safari on Bellair Dam — a standout activity that distinguishes Sanbona from most other Karoo reserves. Excellent for birdwatching and a completely different perspective on the landscape.
Dedicated children's programme at Gondwana Family Lodge. Includes treasure hunts, short night and day bush walks in a fenced area, insect catching, frogging, a visit to the Skull Garden, activity book with educational and interactive content, arts and crafts, board games, and documentary DVDs. Welcome packs provided on arrival. Complimentary child minding available during game drive hours in the kiddies play centre.
On-foot exploration of the Little Karoo flora, fauna, and landscapes guided by expert rangers. Guests under 14 not permitted on walking safaris. Best in the cooler winter months (June–August) for longer distances.
Private dining set up in the bush — guests describe the setup as resembling a 5-star restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Available for honeymoon/anniversary package or on request. Facilities provided in-field.
Seven recorded San rock art sites across the reserve, with some examples dating back over 3,500 years. Guided tours contextualize the art within the history of the San people who inhabited the region for centuries.
Zero light pollution at this remote reserve makes the stargazing exceptional — described as among the best in Southern Africa. Knowledgeable guides provide interpretations of Southern Hemisphere constellations, weaving in San mythology about the stars.
Guides can tailor drives and walks for photography, with diverse landscapes from mountain gorges to wide open Karoo plains plus prolific wildlife subjects.
