Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel
Aristocratic palace hotel with a contemporary twist. The public rooms — a Red Lounge done in pure French Classicism, a Chinese Lounge full of the Duke's oriental collectibles, a cocktail bar with a full author's menu — each feel distinct. Rooms designed by Madrid interior designer Lorenzo Castillo mix 19th-century opulence with modern super-king beds and sleek Barcelona-influenced touches. Feels more like a private house than a hotel, in the best way.
Ask for a room in the original palace building rather than the annex — character is markedly different.
Why It Matters
A pioneer of Madrid's boutique-hotel boom in the 1990s — its refined eclecticism has since been copied throughout Spain. Now flying the Luxury Collection flag, it's The Luxury Collection's first Madrid property. The garden alone, landscaped by Fernando Valero with indigenous plants and original fountains, is arguably the finest private hotel garden in the city. Chef Rafa Peña (of Barcelona's acclaimed Gresca) helms the food program. Conde Nast Traveler Iconic Hotel 2025.
A 19th-century ducal palace turned 49-room luxury hotel in Madrid's aristocratic Chamberí district. Built by architect Juan Bautista Lázaro between 1889 and 1902 for the Duke of Santo Mauro, the French-style building is spread across three structures surrounding a lush private garden with century-old chestnut trees. The ducal family still owns the palace. It's intimate, discreet, and stacked with period furniture, marble fireplaces, and designer rooms — the kind of place where the Beckhams have stayed but the staff won't confirm it.
