The Savoy Palace opened in June 2019 on the exact footprint of Madeira's original 1918 Savoy hotel — the old building was torn down, not renovated. What replaced it is a bold 16-story wave-shaped tower designed by RH+ Arquitectos and interior designer Nini Andrade Silva, now the most recognizable structure on the Funchal skyline. The interiors draw heavily on the island's identity: think Laurissilva forest greens, Madeira embroidery motifs, references to the island's ancient lava tunnels and levadas. At 352 rooms, six pools, eight dining outlets, and a 3,100 sqm spa, this is not a boutique retreat. But it works at scale — each area of the hotel is individually designed so it never feels like an airport terminal.
