Why It Matters
One Michelin Key designation from the Michelin Guide; Werners Restaurant has held one Michelin star continuously since 2006 and 16 Gault Millau points. The castle dates to 1272 and was privately purchased and restored from 2000 onward. It produces its own Riesling and Spätburgunder from an on-site 5-hectare south-facing terraced vineyard.
A 13th-century castle perched 130 meters above the Murg Valley in Germany's Black Forest, Schloss Eberstein is a family-run hotel with a real Michelin star in the kitchen and its own 5-hectare vineyard out the door. Chef-owner Bernd Werner has held that star since 2006, and his wife Roswitha runs the front of house. It's intimate — just 16 rooms — and feels more like staying with a very well-connected family than checking into a hotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hands-on cooking classes led personally by chef-owner Bernd Werner in the professional gourmet kitchen. Participants prepare a 4-course menu and then sit down to eat it with selected wines from the estate vineyard. Werner actively involves participants rather than just demonstrating. Past themes have included truffle courses, 'best meats of the world,' and smoker/grill courses. Hugely popular — book early.
Multiple marked hiking trails start right from the castle. The Murgleiter premium trail runs past the property and connects to the valley below (1.5km to Obertsrot station). The Gernsbacher Sagenweg (fable/legend trail, ~5km) circles the castle hill and features local mythology. The over-90km Murgtalwanderweg long-distance path also passes through. An arboretum on the grounds features 300+ native and foreign tree species.
The castle is a good base for mountain bike routes through the surrounding Black Forest. The hotel can point guests toward routes of varying difficulty.
Every Thursday from June to August, the team fires up a smoker grill on the Platanenterrasse outside the Schloss-Schänke. A more relaxed and affordable way to eat well at the castle, with great views over the vineyard. Book the Smoker-Grillabend arrangement to combine it with an overnight stay.
The castle's own 5-hectare south-facing terraced vineyard grows Riesling and Spätburgunder. Guided vineyard tours and wine tasting sessions are available, particularly for corporate and group bookings. Estate wines are poured in both restaurants.
