Why It Matters
One of the few Puglian masseriae featured by both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Architecturally significant with site-specific work by Álvaro Siza and internationally recognized installation artists. The property produces its own olive oil — Secolario Oil — which shows up in the restaurant and spa treatments.
Secolario is a converted Puglian masseria — a traditional fortified farmhouse — sitting in the middle of a working olive estate about 70 hectares wide, a short drive from the walled city of Otranto. The thick-walled limestone buildings have high vaulted ceilings, exposed wood beams, and earthy white interiors. What makes it genuinely unusual is the art: custom stonework from Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza runs through the common areas, alongside installations by Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and others. Born from two Salentine families — Cazzetta and Marrocco — who built their wealth from Lecce stone and olive wood, the property feels deeply rooted, not just designed to look that way.
