Seehotel Sonne
Historic Swiss boutique with warm informality. Art is everywhere — over 70 originals including Andy Warhol, Meret Oppenheim, and Robert Indiana hang on the walls. Some rooms feel properly antique (creaking floors, exposed beams), others have been renovated with modern Swiss precision. Not stiff or grand-hotel formal; the Sonne leans relaxed and unpretentious.
Book the Junior Suite in the tower — the gabled ceilings and whisky/port selection make it worth the upgrade
Why It Matters
The only hotel in the Zurich region with direct lake access. A 13th-century tower houses the top suites. Over 70 original artworks including a Warhol in the restaurant. The beer garden under the chestnut trees is one of the best spots on all of Lake Zurich in summer, and in winter the hotel runs a lakeside ice rink.
First documented as an inn in 1641, the Sonne has been welcoming guests to the eastern shore of Lake Zurich for nearly four centuries. The hotel's 13th-century tower is still standing — and that's where the best rooms are. It's a 4-star superior boutique property with 40 individually designed rooms, three lake-facing restaurants, a cocktail bar, and a small but genuine wellness area with direct lake access. Zürich is 12 minutes away by train or boat, so you get the calm of the lake without sacrificing city access.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 70 original artworks are displayed throughout the hotel, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana, Meret Oppenheim, Augusto Giacometti, and Bernhard Luginbühl. No formal guided tour, but the collection is viewable throughout the public spaces and rooms.
Immersive murder mystery weekend package — three days at the hotel with the interactive performance 'Der Absturz' by Peter Denlo. The story unfolds from the first dinner onwards, with guests participating throughout.
Modern e-bikes available for hire at the hotel. Ideal for exploring Küsnacht or riding along the lake circuit.
Küsnacht has a lakefront jogging and walking path right by the water — one of the few lake communities with direct promenade access. The Küsnachter Tobel gorge trail, with glacier boulders and rare flora, starts nearby.
The hotel's boat dock connects directly to ZSG lake steamer services. Day trips to Zurich city, Rapperswil, and the Lindt Home of Chocolate (directly accessible by boat) are easy from the front door.
The hotel operates a romantic outdoor ice rink directly on Lake Zurich from November through January. One of the most atmospheric ways to spend a winter evening in the Zurich region.
A private lakeside meadow with loungers and sunshades, directly accessible from the hotel. Guests can swim in Lake Zurich from here. Open in warmer months.
SUP boards available to hire directly from the hotel, launching from the private lakeside meadow.
