Sekitei
Traditional Japanese ryokan meets refined garden sanctuary. Quiet, intimate, literary — think salon culture, koi ponds, and bonfire-lit stone pathways at dusk. The interiors mix Japanese craft with Nordic furniture. No hustle. Very deliberate.
Check in at 15:00 (the earliest) to have time to explore the grounds before dinner — once the kaiseki service starts, the evening is mapped out
Why It Matters
Awarded 2 Michelin Keys in 2025 and 2 Toques from Gault & Millau. The Japanese garden is ranked #4 nationally by Garden Rankings of Japan. Kaiseki cuisine is ranked in the top 20 on Tabelog for all of Hiroshima Prefecture. Only 12 rooms means the staff-to-guest ratio stays high.
Sekitei sits on a gentle slope above Miyahama Onsen, directly across the water from the torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. The property has just 12 rooms spread across a main building, individual sukiya-style detached houses, and a summer house — each one different from the next, either looking out over the Seto Inland Sea or inward onto a meticulously kept Japanese garden ranked fourth in all of Japan. Kaiseki dinners served in-room, radon hot springs, and design spaces filled with Scandinavian chairs alongside Korean Lee Dynasty ceramics make this one of the most artistically considered ryokans in the Hiroshima region.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Sekitei's garden is ranked #4 in Japan nationally by Garden Rankings of Japan — a serious accolade. It runs down a gentle slope from the rocky hillside to the edge of the property, mixing shakkei (borrowed scenery from surrounding mountains and sea) with a koi pond, stone paths, an azumaya pavilion, and seasonal plantings including satsuki azaleas in May–June and maples in autumn. Bonfires and lanterns are lit at dusk, which transforms the corridors completely.
Multiple curated quiet spaces are scattered across the property: Supabunko (library), Bombondo salon, Chushuan salon, Sosotei salon de thé, and the underground library terrace bar. The concept is that guests move between these spaces throughout the day — each offering different views and atmospheres.
Sekitei's affiliated shop Anagomeshi Ueno is located right by Miyajimaguchi Station, which is the ferry embarkation point for Miyajima. Guests can store luggage there before visiting the island, and call the ryokan for a pickup shuttle on return. The ryokan's limousine bus coordinates the logistics.
Simple radon hot spring — classified as a hypotonic, low-alkaline spring with noted therapeutic effects for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and chronic conditions. Public indoor cypress bath and public outdoor open-air bath are both available 24 hours. A fee-charging private rental indoor bath is also available outside guest rooms.
Complimentary sake tasting available to guests. Can be expanded into a full sommelier-guided sake and wine pairing session with sommelier Okada — this includes sampling chilled sake and browsing the wine cellar.
