Sendero Hotel
Surf-forward boutique with genuine community roots. Think gallery-white walls, oversized warehouse windows, earthy materials like repurposed brick and Costa Rican teak, and pops of color from a rotating roster of Costa Rican artists. Elevated without being stiff — the après-surf bar and open-air restaurant set the tone.
Book the Jungle Room if you want the full experience: outdoor shower, large daybed, and direct views over the nature preserve. The Queen Rooms are the smallest on property.
Why It Matters
Founded by a traveler-turned-hotelier with deep community ties, Sendero is a Leading Hotels of the World member that genuinely earns the designation. It's the only hotel in Nosara with an in-house surf school (Chorotegas), a proper wellness studio running 2–3 classes daily, and a restaurant that locals actually eat at. The commitment to local hiring, Costa Rican artwork, rainwater collection, and solar panels isn't just marketing — it's baked into operations.
Stefanie Tannenbaum got stranded in Nosara on a 2020 surf trip and never really left — she just opened a hotel instead. Sendero sits a literal hundred paces from Playa Guiones, one of Costa Rica's most consistent sand-bottom beach breaks, with nothing between you and the waves but a jungle trail (sendero means 'path' in Spanish). The property has 25 rooms and suites in a hacienda-style main building, plus seven brand-new private villas added in 2023, all built around a saltwater pool and bordered by an 11-acre nature preserve.
