Eagles Crag
Minimalist luxury meets raw wilderness. Clean lines, monochrome interiors, no fussy colonial touches. The architecture does the talking — floor-to-ceiling glass, private plunge pools, aerial viewing pods on the upper deck. Sophisticated without being stuffy.

Why It Matters
Shamwari was the first private game reserve established in the Eastern Cape and remains its largest at 25,000 hectares. Eagles Crag is the top-tier lodge within that reserve. The gorge setting is genuinely unusual — most safari lodges sit on open plains, but here the landscape funnels directly around you. And the Big Five roam malaria-free, which matters for families and those who prefer to skip the prophylactics.
Eagles Crag sits in a deep gorge cut through the Shamwari Private Game Reserve's mountain ranges, built from thatch, stone, and glass at an elevation that puts you eye-level with the rock faces where black eagles actually nest. Nine junior suites face the gorge wall with wall-to-wall glass on two sides. The canyon acts as a wildlife corridor, meaning animals pass through regularly without guests having to go looking for them. Reopened in September 2018 after extensive renovations, it is consistently ranked as the flagship lodge in the Shamwari collection.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 250 bird species on the reserve including Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles, Secretary Birds, and the eponymous black eagles nesting in the cliffs above Eagles Crag. Specialist birding guides available.
Professionally guided walks focusing on tracking, plants, insects, birds, and smaller bush life often missed from a vehicle. Must be pre-booked. Age restriction: 16–65 only; pregnant guests not permitted for safety reasons.
Twice-daily Big Five game drives in open 4x4 Landcruisers, led by professional rangers. Morning drives run at sunrise; afternoon drives run through to dusk and often into the evening for nocturnal species. Duration approximately 3–4 hours each. The reserve's canyon geography means animals use known corridors, giving rangers a strong advantage in finding game. Swarovski binoculars provided to guests.
Boat-based game viewing on the reserve's river system, offering a different vantage point for hippos and waterbirds.
The Born Free Foundation operates two big cat sanctuaries on the Shamwari reserve, housing lions and leopards rescued from zoos, circuses, and private captivity. Guests can visit and learn about the rehabilitation work. The sanctuary sits close to Eagles Crag.
Vulpro is a vulture conservation programme operating within the reserve, offering in-situ and ex-situ conservation work. Guests can visit and learn about vulture rehabilitation and ecosystem balance.
Shamwari's on-reserve rehabilitation centre treats injured and orphaned wildlife. Guests can visit the centre as part of their safari experience and observe animals in care.
Evening game drives often stop at scenic spots in the reserve for sundowner drinks — wine, spirits, and snacks served in the bush as the sun sets. Occasionally arranged as private experiences for couples.
The Eastern Cape's low light-pollution and clear skies make for exceptional star gazing from the lodge's upper deck or open bush setting.
