Shamwari Riverdene
Colonial frontier homestead with warm, lived-in comfort. Family-friendly without being chaotic — think manicured gardens, a boma over the Bushman's River waterhole, and a bar with a fireplace for when the kids finally crash.
Register the kids for the Adventure Centre the moment you arrive — the children's coordinator will set up a full activity schedule.
Why It Matters
One of the only purpose-built family safari lodges in a private Big 5 reserve where every family unit gets its own dedicated ranger and vehicle. The Kids on Safari Adventure Centre is genuinely impressive — ziplines, treehouse networks, pizza-making on a wood-fired oven — not just a room with toys. Fully malaria-free.
Riverdene is the family lodge at Shamwari Private Game Reserve — a malaria-free Big 5 reserve in South Africa's Eastern Cape built around a beautifully restored colonial frontier homestead. Nine inter-leading luxury rooms spread across four family units, each with its own private safari vehicle. The real headline is the Kids on Safari Adventure Centre: a multi-storey outdoor play complex with ziplines, rock climbing walls, treehouses connected by suspended walkways, and a maze. Parents get two daily game drives in their own vehicle while the kids have a supervised program that actually teaches conservation.

Specialist birding with expert guides who know the habits and habitats of the Eastern Cape's diverse birdlife, from tiny forest birds to birds of prey. The reserve's position across five ecosystems supports exceptional variety.
Professionally guided walks on foot through the reserve with expert rangers who share their knowledge of flora, fauna, and tracking. An entirely different perspective to the game drive — slower, quieter, and more immersive.
Morning and afternoon game drives in a private open 4x4 vehicle with a dedicated ranger and tracker. Each family unit has its own vehicle — no sharing with other guests. The reserve is home to the Big Five plus cheetah, hippo, zebra, wildebeest, caracal, brown hyena, and over 250 bird species. Children from age 3 are welcome; Swarovski binoculars are provided for kids.
A boat excursion on the Bushman's River — a different way to explore the reserve and observe wildlife along the riverbanks.
Evening stargazing experience in the Eastern Cape's dark skies, away from light pollution. The reserve's remote location makes for exceptional visibility.
A visit to the Born Free Foundation's two big cat sanctuaries within Shamwari. Lions and leopards rescued from zoos, circuses, and private ownership live here. Guided tours explain each animal's story and broader conservation context. Children under 3 are not permitted.
A visit to the Vulpro vulture conservation programme operating within Shamwari, supporting both in-situ and ex-situ conservation of vulture species. Part of Shamwari's broader conservation experience.
A guided visit to Shamwari's on-site wildlife rehabilitation facility where injured, orphaned, and sick wild animals receive care before being returned to the wild. A real behind-the-scenes look at conservation in action — popular with kids and adults alike. Children under 3 are not permitted.
An extensive outdoor and indoor activity centre at Riverdene. Outdoor features include a zipline (up to 50kg), rock climbing walls, treehouses connected by suspended walkways, an adventure slide, and a maze. Indoor activities include a kids' library, arts and crafts, pizza making on a wood-fired oven, and cookie decorating. A children's coordinator manages activities throughout the day. All ages welcome; childminding available at extra cost for children under 3.
A specialized photography-focused safari experience for enthusiasts. Requires pre-booking through the lodge.
