Sarili
Contemporary African luxury. Modern interiors with natural materials — sisal, timber, stone — layered against thatched architecture. Warm and residential rather than hotel-like. Family-focused without being theme-park about it.
Book the villa exclusively — there is no option to book individual rooms, so the price is per villa per night for your group.
Why It Matters
One of the few fully exclusive-use private villas in a malaria-free Big Five reserve in South Africa's Eastern Cape. Named after Sarili ka Hintsa, paramount chief of the Xhosa people for over 50 years in the 1800s. The entire lodge — staff, vehicles, kitchen — operates solely for your group. Shamwari itself spans 25,000 hectares and covers five of South Africa's seven biomes, which is why the wildlife diversity here punches well above average for a non-Kruger reserve.
Sarili is Shamwari Private Game Reserve's most private offering: a six-bedroom exclusive-use villa perched on the banks of the Bushman's River, booked out in its entirety for one group at a time. Maximum 12 adults plus two children. The design leans contemporary African — clean lines, warm textures, thatched roofing — and every detail has been built around the idea that your group owns the place for the duration. You get a dedicated house manager, personal chef, private ranger, and your own safari vehicle. No sharing with other guests, no communal game drive briefings.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 250 bird species in the reserve including Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Booted Eagles, Secretary Birds, African Fish Eagle, and kingfishers along the Bushman's River. Specialist birding guides available.
The Eastern Cape's dark skies and low light pollution make for exceptional stargazing. Guided astronomy sessions available from the lodge.
Boat trips on the Bushman's River for a different angle on the reserve's wildlife and birdlife.
The Born Free Foundation operates two big cat sanctuaries at Shamwari in partnership with the Shamwari Foundation. Lions and leopards rescued from zoos, circuses, and private ownership live here. Guided visits included as part of the safari experience.
Extended multi-day conservation volunteering programme, available as an add-on to any lodge stay. Involves hands-on conservation fieldwork with Shamwari's wildlife team.
Vulture conservation programme visit. Vulpro runs in-situ and ex-situ conservation work for vultures at Shamwari, and guests can visit and learn about the project.
Guided visit to Shamwari's on-reserve Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where injured and orphaned animals are cared for ahead of release back into the wild. Guests can have one-to-one encounters with animals currently in care.
Professionally guided walks through the reserve with an experienced ranger. Focused on smaller creatures, tracking, plants, birds, and the kind of detail you miss from a vehicle. Children under 4 cannot participate in game drives but may join gentler walking experiences.
Twice-daily drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles at dawn and dusk, each lasting 3–4 hours. Guests at Sarili have their own private vehicle and dedicated ranger — no sharing with other lodges. Evening drives include a sundowner stop, then spotlight wildlife viewing after dark. Big Five sightings are regular; cheetah, hippo, giraffe, zebra and wild dog are also frequently seen.
Shamwari's dedicated children's programme. Kids aged 4 and older can join game drives; a backpack activities booklet keeps them engaged during drives with ranger-guided tasks. For younger kids, childminding is available at an additional cost. The Riverdene Family Lodge — about 10 minutes away — has a full Kids on Safari Adventure Centre with rock climbing, zip lines, tree houses, pizza making, and arts and crafts.
