Why It Matters

Ash is one of the more thoughtful boutique hotel companies in the US — each property (Peter & Paul in New Orleans, the Siren in Detroit, Ulysses in Baltimore) earns its Michelin Guide selection. Shenandoah Mansions is their most design-forward yet, with 73 rooms each inspired by different historic Virginia residences, and a building with real provenance: it was financed by Ellen Gertrude Tompkins Kidd, a women's suffrage activist who made her fortune in the pickle business.

Shenandoah Mansions is Ash's fifth hotel, and it's the most Richmond thing they could have done. The red-brick six-story building started life as a luxury apartment block designed by German-born architect Carl Ruehrmund — the same guy John D. Rockefeller kept on retainer — then spent time as a senior living facility before Ash got its hands on it. Now it's 73 rooms of Virginia folk-art references, canopy beds in gemstone colors, and block-printed quilts, with a lobby featuring hand-painted trompe l'oeil wood grain and a grand staircase that leads to winding corridors of heavy wooden doors. The whole place leans into a playful, slightly gothic imagination: folk art lamps, vintage textile upholstery, bathrooms done in Delft tile, and an intimate cocktail bar — The Phone Inn — tucked behind iron lacework.

7 room types available

Lady Estelle
Junior Suite

Lady Estelle

Named for a historic Virginia figure, this junior suite pairs a queen canopy bed with a writer's desk and a dedicated lounge — genuinely useful if you're working remotely or want space to spread out. 260 sq ft.

Suite

Serpentine Suite

The most extravagant room in the house at 590 sq ft. Palatial by boutique hotel standards: large bay windows overlooking Monument Avenue, a wet bar, his-and-hers sinks, and a freestanding cast-iron tub with treetop views. The pick for anyone celebrating something.

The King
Standard King

The King

A king canopy bed plus a seating area for 'charades and pantomimes,' per the hotel's own description. At 255 sq ft it's only marginally larger than The Queen, but the separate seating nook makes it feel less like a single-purpose sleep box.

The Pair
Standard Double

The Pair

Two canopy queen beds in 323 sq ft — the widest footprint among the standard rooms. Good for friends traveling together or families who want a proper second bed rather than a cot.

The Queen
Standard

The Queen

The entry-level room, but far from basic. A 245 sq ft space built around a single canopy queen bed with a tile bathroom. Compact, but the high ceilings and oversized windows give it more air than the square footage suggests.

The Van Lew
Junior Suite

The Van Lew

Named for Elizabeth Van Lew, Richmond's famous Union spy during the Civil War. At 321 sq ft, this suite is characterized by expansive bay windows and a finely-furnished lounge. King canopy bed.

Titania's Veil

One of the headline suites. At 501 sq ft it's draped in a Prussian blue lifted from Mount Vernon's color palette, with an arch-covered seating nook, large bay windows, Frette Italian sheets on a king canopy bed, a minibar, and a freestanding cast-iron tub. This is the room that gets shared on Instagram.
