Shenandoah Mansions
Gothic-folk-art boutique. Virginia tradition filtered through a fantastical, slightly witchy lens. Think mahogany four-poster canopy beds, Prussian blue walls, Frette linens, and a cocktail menu that name-checks Shenandoah Valley starry nights.

Why It Matters
Ash is one of the more thoughtful boutique hotel companies in the US — each property (Peter & Paul in New Orleans, the Siren in Detroit, Ulysses in Baltimore) earns its Michelin Guide selection. Shenandoah Mansions is their most design-forward yet, with 73 rooms each inspired by different historic Virginia residences, and a building with real provenance: it was financed by Ellen Gertrude Tompkins Kidd, a women's suffrage activist who made her fortune in the pickle business.
Shenandoah Mansions is Ash's fifth hotel, and it's the most Richmond thing they could have done. The red-brick six-story building started life as a luxury apartment block designed by German-born architect Carl Ruehrmund — the same guy John D. Rockefeller kept on retainer — then spent time as a senior living facility before Ash got its hands on it. Now it's 73 rooms of Virginia folk-art references, canopy beds in gemstone colors, and block-printed quilts, with a lobby featuring hand-painted trompe l'oeil wood grain and a grand staircase that leads to winding corridors of heavy wooden doors. The whole place leans into a playful, slightly gothic imagination: folk art lamps, vintage textile upholstery, bathrooms done in Delft tile, and an intimate cocktail bar — The Phone Inn — tucked behind iron lacework.
