Kyoto
Contemporary Japanese-Zen wellness hotel. Calm, biophilic, design-forward. Earthy palette with a thread of folkloric quirkiness running through the details. Scando-Japan aesthetic with serious sustainability credentials and an on-site micro-farm.
Ask for a room with a Toyokuni Shrine garden view — it's the most serene outlook and worth specifying at booking
Why It Matters
First Six Senses property in Japan and the brand's flagship urban hotel concept. Houses Kyoto's only Watsu-dedicated pool. The spa integrates biomarker screening and biohacking technology alongside traditional Zen healing — genuinely unusual for a city-center hotel. Dining at Sekki follows Japan's 24 micro-seasons (sekki) with produce from a neighboring 7th-generation farm.
Six Senses Kyoto opened in April 2024 as the brand's first property in Japan — and its first true urban hotel. It sits in the Higashiyama district across from the 16th-century Toyokuni Shrine, a short walk from the Kyoto National Museum and Sanjusangendo Temple. The design, by Singapore's BLINK Design Group, draws from the Heian period (794–1185): earthy organic tones, hand-crafted Rakuyaki tile screens, copper bedside lighting made by local artisans, and playful fox masks outside each room door. It's a full-service wellness hotel, not a resort — no beach, no vast grounds — but the spa alone is worth the trip.
