Laamu
Barefoot eco-luxury. Natural materials everywhere, serious sustainability credentials, no pretension — but the service and facilities are absolutely world-class. Feels genuinely wild and remote, not manicured.
Book Leaf (the adults-only restaurant) as early as possible — it's the most in-demand table on the island
Why It Matters
The sole five-star property on Laamu Atoll — which means no day-tripping boats, no other resorts in sight, and a house reef accessed directly from the Chill Bar without boarding a boat. The MUI conservation program is one of the most serious guest-facing marine science operations in the Maldives. Add the Yin Yang surf break (April–November), Tropicsurf guides on property, and seven distinct dining venues including an adults-only Mediterranean restaurant above an organic herb garden.
The only five-star resort on Laamu Atoll, Six Senses Laamu occupies one of the genuinely remote islands in the southern Maldives. Getting here means a 45-minute seaplane from Malé, and that flight over scattered atolls is part of the show. Ninety-four villas — over-water and beachfront, all built from local sustainable materials — fringe an island with one of the healthiest house reefs in the southern Maldives. Six Senses runs an award-winning marine conservation initiative (MUI) here in partnership with the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and Olive Ridley Project, so scientists are actually working onsite and guests can join real reef research.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
An open-air cinema under a canopy of tangled branches and stars — popcorn and chilled champagne included. Can request films in advance.
For younger guests: guided snorkels and classroom sessions run by the MUI marine biology team. Participants build toward a Junior Marine Biologist certificate across progressive levels, collecting gear as they complete each stage.
A private beach barbecue set up by the resort team — personal chef, fresh lobster, and a table under the stars on a stretch of white sand.
A genuine Robinson Crusoe day on an uninhabited island — the resort arranges a boat, private chef, lunch setup, and full day exclusive use of an otherwise untouched beach.
Guided nature-based experiences connecting guests to the island ecosystem and local community — ranges from beach ecology to island hopping to local village visits.
On-site PADI dive center (Deep Blue Divers) offers guided dives, certification courses, and night dives. Laamu's atoll sits atop world-class dive sites with mantas, shark pinnacles, and pristine coral walls.
One of the strongest house reefs in the southern Maldives, accessible directly from the Chill Bar without a boat. Turtles, manta rays, parrotfish, and reef sharks are regular sightings.
The resort's most popular activity: a traditional wooden dhoni, glass of bubbly in hand, cruising with spinner dolphins at sunset. Spinner dolphins are resident year-round in these waters.
Tropicsurf operates on-site April through November for the Yin Yang break — a quality reef pass suitable for all levels with proper instruction. Beginners and intermediates welcome, high-end boards and wetsuits provided.
Kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and other water toys available from the on-site Ocean Wings center.
A behind-the-scenes look at the resort's environmental operations: the Earth Lab, waste management systems, organic garden, coral nursery, and conservation initiatives. More interesting than it sounds.
Seasonal experience (July–October most active) watching olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings emerge and make for the ocean, supported by the Olive Ridley Project staff on property.
A guided snorkel trip specifically targeting turtle spots around the atoll, in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project team.
