Melbourne on Collins
French-inflected luxury tower hotel with an arts identity. Gold mirrored atrium rising fifteen floors through the building's core, rotating art exhibitions in corridors and lobbies, pastel macarons on arrival. Serious business hotel that also does romance and high tea very well.
Bay & River View rooms face south toward Port Phillip — worth asking for at check-in if you're in a city-view room and the upgrade isn't too steep
Why It Matters
One of Melbourne's only hotels where the entry-level room is already 36 floors up — the view is a guarantee, not an upgrade. The Club Sofitel lounge on Level 35 is marketed as the highest executive lounge in the city. The hotel identifies as a 'Hotel for the Arts' with exhibition programming that changes up to 16 times a year and an artist residency program.
Sofitel Melbourne On Collins starts where most city hotels stop: Level 36. Every single room sits above the Melbourne skyline — the lowest floor you'll sleep on is the 36th — with floor-to-ceiling windows and blackout timber shutters framing views of the Yarra River, Port Phillip Bay, and the MCG. The building itself is one half of the 1981 Collins Place twin towers, a 50-storey slab that anchors the Paris end of Collins Street. Rooms were fully refurbished in 2022 with contemporary furniture, French-inspired photography in 'Salon' style, 55-inch Chromecast TVs, and in-room Samsung tablets. No pool — that's the one conspicuous absence for a five-star property — but the SoFIT gym on Level 36 probably has the best views of any hotel treadmill in Australia.
