Sola Boutique Hotel
Nature-forward minimalist. Clean lines, raw textures, and a genuine working estate setting. It feels more like a small private compound than a hotel. The owner is often on-site, which shows.
Book the Suite with Bathtub if it's available — the private outdoor tub surrounded by jungle is a genuine upgrade
Why It Matters
Selected by both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. One of the very few properties on Sri Lanka's south coast where the food literally comes from the property's own harvest. The open-air bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling jungle views are genuinely special, not just a marketing claim. Legitimately remote-feeling, yet just minutes from Ahangama town and surf.
Eight suites on three acres of working tropical estate in the hills above Ahangama. The land is the whole point: 150 coconut trees, a 1,000 sqm tea plantation, 3,000 sqm of cinnamon, and a growing orchard of pineapple, mango, rambutan, and avocado planted since 2021. Purple-faced langur monkeys swing through the canopy, peacocks strut across the grounds, and civets emerge after dark. Rooms face the paddy fields and jungle with floor-to-ceiling glass and open-air showers. The 15-meter infinity pool anchors a two-story open pavilion that houses restaurant MALI and the bar.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Included in retreat packages. A cycling route through the surrounding paddy field landscape — the same views you get from your suite, explored at ground level.
Included in the Back to Nature retreat package; bookable separately. Koggala Lake is a scenic inland lagoon close to Ahangama with cinnamon-producing islands.
A guided walk through SOLA's 3,000+ sqm cinnamon gardens. You learn the traditional harvesting technique passed down through Sri Lankan craftsmen — slow, meditative, and surprisingly absorbing. Runs twice a week.
Guided walk through SOLA's three acres to experience the diversity of flora and fauna — coconut palms, tea and coffee plants, tropical fruits, plus langur monkeys, peacocks, mongooses, civets, butterflies, and birdlife. An easy way to actually understand the working estate rather than just viewing it from your terrace.
Non-guests and day visitors can access the 15-meter infinity pool from 9am to 5pm. The LKR 5,000 fee is fully redeemable against food and drinks at MALI, making it effectively free if you eat lunch. Bring your own towel or buy a SOLA pool towel in-house.
Partnered with Ticket to Ride, a crew of certified coaches operating minutes from the hotel in Ahangama. Whether it's your first wave or you're refining your technique, sessions include board, transport to the best local break, and a post-surf technique review. Book at least 24 hours ahead. Use code SOLA10 for 10% off.
Private yoga on the upper deck pavilion or your lodge terrace. Up to 3 students per session. Tailored to your level and goals — strength, flexibility, or pure relaxation. See Spa section for pricing.
