Book the early morning private launch to the thermal hot springs — it's a solitary, very special experience before other guests are up

Why It Matters

One of NZ's original luxury lodges with Michelin recognition, full-board all-inclusive tariff, a genuinely remote private peninsula on a volcanic lake, and rainbow trout fishing where the catch can go straight to the kitchen.

Solitaire Lodge sits on a private peninsula jutting into Lake Tarawera, with Mount Tarawera's dormant volcanic crater filling the horizon. It is New Zealand's second-oldest luxury lodge — only Huka Lodge in Taupo predates it — and that history shows in the confidence of the operation. Nine suites, all full board, all with floor-to-ceiling lake views. The proportions are intimate enough that the owners know your name within an hour of arrival.

5 room types available

Suite

Executive Suite

The entry-level suite — though at 40 sqm it's not cramped. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a private balcony put Lake Tarawera right in front of you. Super king bed (twin configuration available on request), freestanding bath with lake views, lounge chairs, and picture windows. One suite in this category has a rare outdoor bathtub on the balcony.

Suite

Premium Executive Suite

Same 40 sqm footprint as the Executive Suite but positioned for sweeping views over both the lake and the volcanic peak of Mount Tarawera. Super king bed, comfortable lounge chairs, picture windows, and a private balcony. The premium here is really about the view angle — mountain comes into frame alongside the water.

Suite

Solitaire Suite

The most private accommodation on the property — set in a completely separate building away from the main lodge. One or two bedrooms (75 or 88 sqm), with a large master bedroom, a lounge, private sundeck, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling picture windows looking straight across the glassy lake toward Mount Tarawera. The second bedroom adds a separate bathroom with a freestanding bath. Total seclusion without sacrificing any of the full-board inclusions.

Suite

Tarawera Suite

The step up in space matters here. At 70 sqm, this split-level suite delivers the lodge's most uninterrupted panorama — a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass sweeping from the tranquil bay across the glassy lake to the summit of Mount Tarawera. Generous bedroom with lavish super king, separate sitting area and dining space, private balconies on both levels. The view alone justifies the upgrade.

Villa

Villa Suite

A standalone two-storey villa — the best option for families or two couples travelling together. The ground floor has the master bedroom with super king bed, ensuite with freestanding bath overlooking the lake, open-plan kitchenette, and a living and dining area that opens to a private deck overlooking the bay. The second bedroom upstairs has its own ensuite and can be configured with a super king or singles.
