Sokos Hotel Pier 4
Calm, grounded Nordic design hotel. Heavy on natural materials — Nordic spruce, birch, Viitasaari granite — with a signature pine scent throughout and birdsong softly playing in the corridors. Minimalist without feeling cold.
The complimentary sauna runs only 5–9pm on weekdays and 8–10am on weekend mornings — plan accordingly
Why It Matters
One of Helsinki's first purpose-built timber hotels, opened in 2024 inside a landmark structure by Anttinen Oiva Architects. The building is shared with Stora Enso's Finnish forestry HQ — which tells you something about the sustainability credentials. Green Key certified, listed on Tablet Hotels and the Michelin Guide. Interior design by Franz Design. Art throughout sourced from Finnish creatives.
Pier 4 sits inside Katajanokan Laituri, a landmark timber-framed building by Anttinen Oiva Architects right on Helsinki's Katajanokka waterfront. The scent of pine hits you in the lobby — a circular atrium with birch-paneled ceilings that shoot upward like cathedral buttresses — and it doesn't really let up. The 164 rooms are deliberately minimalist: pale wood, locally commissioned art, and a minibar stocked with Finnish beer and blueberry juice from Turku breweries. Look, this is not a conventional luxury hotel; it's a design-led sustainability statement that happens to work very well as a place to sleep.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Market Square ferry docks are a short walk from the hotel, with regular ferries to Suomenlinna, Vallisaari, and other Helsinki archipelago islands. The hotel can advise on schedules.
State-of-the-art conference facilities on the ground floor. The building's timber-framed setting makes these rooms more interesting than the average hotel meeting room — Wallpaper* described them as 'state-of-the-art.'
The pollinator-friendly rooftop garden covers the entire building with planted herbs, walking paths, and sweeping 360-degree views. The herbs grown here feed both the rooftop bar cocktails and the restaurant kitchen. In summer, the seagulls occasionally nest here too.
Several coastal jogging routes start directly from the hotel. Following the shoreline takes you through Market Square to the Kaivopuisto route with sea views. The hotel also has bike storage for cycling.
