Sommerro is Oslo's former municipal power company headquarters — a monumental 1917–1930 Art Deco building that reopened in September 2022 as one of Norway's most acclaimed hotels. The GrecoDeco-designed interiors layer rich marquetry, amber lighting, hand-knotted rugs and Per Krohg frescoes over original neoclassical bones, making the whole place feel like a portal to the 1930s that somehow also has a rooftop pool. It functions as much as a public social hub as a hotel: any Osloite can walk in for jazz, dinner, or a dip, which keeps the energy genuinely local rather than hermetically luxury.

Like a 1930s townhouse elegantly shrunk to hotel scale. Anchored by a polished birch bed with chequerboard inlay, a marquetry minibar cabinet, Norwegian floral elements and softly curved walls with Art Deco stepped ceiling mouldings. Some rooms have a bathtub in addition to the walk-in shower. Two can be connected to suites for families.

Heritage Suite
Sommerro's most expansive rooms at 70–100 sqm. A super king-size bed backed by a headboard inlaid with timber and mother of pearl, velvet wall coverings and sofas, a walk-in wardrobe, a guest lobby and toilet, plus the full bathroom with twin basin, walk-in shower and deep soaking tub. Separate living room. The space feels genuinely residential.

Murano glass chandelier overhead, a bleached oak chrome-detailed king four-poster bed, bespoke furnishings upholstered in fabric inspired by Norwegian artist Gerhard Munthe, and a dining table for two. The bathroom is the real star: dusty pink marble, twin basin, walk-in shower and a deep-soaking tub. Includes access to the full Vestkantbadet complex including the rooftop pool.

Sommerro's intimate cinema, inspired by Tancred Ibsen (who introduced Norway's first sound film in 1931), seats guests in deep-tufted Art Deco lounge chairs. Can be rented for private screenings. Weekly public screenings throughout the year.

Sommerro's house jazz band plays in Ekspedisjonshallen every single day, with guest vocalists. Multiple performances per day on weekends. It's genuinely good — not background muzak.
