St Martins Lane Hotel
Surrealist designer boutique — Starck-conceived theatrical interiors with bold public spaces, crisp white rooms, and an irreverent, art-directed personality. Edgy but polished.
Blind Spot is closed on Mondays; Tue–Thu it runs until 1am, Fri–Sat until 2am — plan your late night accordingly
Why It Matters
One of London's original design hotels, conceived by Philippe Starck in the late 1990s as a deliberate subversion of the English country-house hotel. The Blind Spot speakeasy — accessed by shaking a golden hand-shaped door handle — remains one of London's more genuinely theatrical bar experiences. Interior updates by Tim Andreas (of Banjo) added warmth without losing the original eccentricity.
Philippe Starck's surrealist design vision — gold teeth seating, life-sized chess pieces in the lobby, and a boutique tea counter hiding a secret late-night speakeasy — gives this 5-star Covent Garden hotel a distinct personality that most London properties can only gesture toward. All 203 rooms and suites come with floor-to-ceiling windows pulling the city skyline into the room, plus LED color-changing light coves you actually control. No pool, no dedicated spa on-site, but the location makes up for a lot: Leicester Square tube is a 3-minute walk, Trafalgar Square is under 5 minutes on foot, and the Royal Opera House is a 5-minute stroll.
