Suigan
Radically private, room-centric luxury ryokan. Zero communal spaces by design. Think private apartment in a national park, not a traditional inn with group baths and banquet dining.
Room 102 (Azuma-Asobi) is the largest and most feature-rich at 126 sqm — sauna, theater, open-air bath — but has the most internal steps including a ladder stair, so be aware if mobility is a concern
Why It Matters
One of very few properties in Japan built entirely around the idea that staff never enter your room. Every suite has its own hot spring, and the whole stay is designed to run on your schedule. Listed on both Tablet Hotels and Michelin Guide. The annex 'Matsunao Ibara' opened October 2025, adding seven mountain-view western-style rooms with an open-kitchen restaurant.
Suigan is a seven-suite all-in inn sitting slightly apart from the main Jozankei hot spring strip, right on the edge of the Maizuru no Toro gorge inside a national park. The whole concept is built around staying in your room — no lobby lounge, no public bath, no staff knocking. Each suite draws from a private blend of three on-site hot spring sources, and ranges from 76 to 126 sqm. Two suites have proper saunas with HARVIA heaters; one comes with a 130-inch projector theater. A complimentary Premium Access pass opens up nine-plus affiliated baths and lounges across Jozankei, with shuttle transport included. Opened June 2023 as the tenth property in the Daiichi Hotel Group.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Private sauna rooms fitted with HARVIA CILINDRO heaters in Rooms 101 and 102. Self-löyly (steam-throwing) supported. Capacity for 3–4 adults. Views of the gorge and trees from inside the sauna.
Room 102 (Azuma-Asobi) is equipped with a 130-inch+ projector screen and DVD deck. Guests can watch films in the dedicated mezzanine theater space.
The Futami Suspension Bridge, a short walk from the property, leads to a trail with views of river bends and the Maizuru gorge rock formations. Autumn foliage in October–November makes this one of the most popular times to visit. Jozankei national park trails start practically from the front door.
Every suite has its own private hot spring bath fed from a blend of three on-site sodium chloride sources (avg source temp 69°C). Rooms vary: some have large open-air baths, some have reclining/sleeping baths (ne-yu), some are indoor observation baths. Use whenever you want, as long as you want.
Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort is about 12 miles from the property. Teine Olympia is also accessible by car. Suigan doesn't run ski packages but the location makes it a viable base for day ski trips.
Complimentary pass for all Suigan guests. Covers free, unlimited use of large baths and lounges at nine-plus affiliated Daiichi Hotel Group properties across Jozankei, including Jozankei Daiichi Hotel Suizantei (large indoor/outdoor baths, sauna), Kuriya Suizan (private rental sauna), Suichokan women's baths, Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten, Kyuujitsu Building's day spa, and Koganeyu. Shuttle transport included. Valid from 15:00 check-in day to 11:00 check-out.
A small self-serve pantry on the first floor stocked with complimentary soft drinks, beer, sparkling water, ice cream, snacks (retro Japanese candy and sweets), towels, and ice. Open from 15:00 on arrival day to 11:00 on departure day. Take what you need and bring it back to your room.
