Suiran, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto
Ryokan-inspired luxury. Think ink-black lacquerware trays, iron teapots, handmade yuzu soap wrapped in rice paper, and moss-carpeted gardens. It is thoroughly Japanese in aesthetic, but without the language barrier anxiety that some traditional inns bring.
Book a ground-floor room with a private garden if you want the most ryokan-like feel; upper-floor rooms have balconies and better views but feel more Western hotel.
Why It Matters
Holder of a 2025 Michelin 1 Key award and a 2023 Condé Nast Readers' Choice Award. One of very few true onsen hotels in the Marriott portfolio globally — 17 of its 39 rooms have private open-air hot spring baths. The entire property sits on grounds steeped in aristocratic Kyoto history, with three dining venues housed in 100+ year-old Meiji-era structures.
Suiran is a 39-room onsen hotel on the banks of the jade-green Hozu River in Arashiyama, the forested western flank of Kyoto. Part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, it blends genuine ryokan sensibilities — tatami touches, cedar onsen baths, yukata robes — with the reliability of a five-star international hotel. The restaurant and café both operate out of restored Meiji-era buildings over a century old, which gives the property a sense of history you can actually eat dinner in.
