Sul Villas & Spa sits on a cliff above the southern shore of São Miguel Island, overlooking the Atlantic and the 18th-century Church of Santa Cruz. The place was built by Rodrigo Herédia, a former pro surfer who traded the waves for a career in boutique hospitality — and it shows: the design is clean-lined and contemporary, not a beach shack, but not trying to be a grand hotel either. With just 12 villas, it stays intimate. Every unit comes with a private terrace and kitchenette, and the upper tiers add private plunge pools or jacuzzis.
