Sunyata Hotel Meili
Tibetan vernacular architecture meets Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy — raw rammed-earth walls, handmade touches, Buddhist murals, and austere luxury. Contemplative and intentional. This is not a resort; it's closer to a meditation on place.

Why It Matters
Michelin Guide Selected. Designed by the acclaimed Zhaoyang Architects as a renovation of a vernacular Tibetan homestead. The only luxury property with direct panoramic views of Kawagarbo Peak — the sacred first of the eight holy Tibetan mountains — from inside your room. Rated 9.7/10 on Trip.com and 10/10 on Booking.com.
Built inside a gutted Tibetan farmhouse in one of the most remote villages on earth, the Sunyata Hotel Meili sits at 3,600 meters above sea level in Wunongding, a hamlet of just 22 households that hasn't changed much in centuries. The architecture — designed by Zhaoyang Architects — keeps the original rammed-earth facade but replaces the timber bones with concrete, resulting in something that feels simultaneously ancient and precise. It's wabi-sabi done seriously: rough stone walls alongside a gold curved arch ceiling, Buddhist murals beside minimalist custom furniture by Ke Xie's Yiji Collection. The draw is simple: unobstructed, face-to-face views of Kawagarbo, the highest peak in the Meili Snow Mountain range and the holiest mountain in Tibetan Buddhism. On a clear morning, you watch the 'Golden Mountain' sunrise from your room.

On-site archery listed among the hotel's activity offerings.
At 3,600m with minimal light pollution, the night skies above Wunongding are exceptional. Staff conduct informal stargazing sessions, pointing out constellations and explaining local astronomical traditions. Also referenced as 'painting sessions' under the stars in some guest reviews.
Guided and self-guided hiking from the hotel into the surrounding mountain terrain. The Meili Thirteen Pagodas are 260m away on foot. Wunongding Viewing Platform is 350m from the hotel. The area around the G214 highway also offers access to the broader Meili Snow Mountain National Park trails.
The hotel organizes tours into the surrounding Tibetan villages and to key local landmarks including Feilai Temple. Staff are knowledgeable about the cultural significance of Kawagarbo and Tibetan Buddhism in this region.
The 'Golden Mountain in Sunlight' (日照金山) phenomenon — when the first rays of sunlight strike Kawagarbo Peak, turning it gold — is the defining experience here. Best viewed from the fourth-floor Kawagebo bar or from rooms with direct snow mountain views. Staff will wake you at the right time and explain the significance of each of the thirteen peaks.
Organized movie screenings available for guests on-site.
