Why It Matters

One of the few cave hotels in Cappadocia with a Michelin Key designation and Virtuoso Preferred status. The property was a genuine archaeological restoration — original tanders (stone ovens), pigeon coops, and animal tether notches were preserved in place. Chef Sadi Saygılı's cave restaurant The Nest has become a destination in its own right. The Galileo Terrace stargazing experience with a vintage telescope is unique to this hotel.

Tafoni Houses is 18 cave and vaulted suites carved out of ancient dwellings in the village of Ortahisar — the official center of Cappadocia. The name comes from the local word for the bird nests found atop the region's fairy chimneys, and every suite is named after a Cappadocian bird. Originally purchased in 2006 and opened in 2012 after painstaking restoration, the property runs closer to an intimate art-filled villa than a conventional cave hotel: think original antiques, vintage furniture, sweeping panorama terraces, and a cave restaurant that takes Turkish cuisine seriously.
