Usha Kiran Palace, Gwalior
Maratha royal heritage meets contemporary tropical comfort. Stone carvings, intricate filigree work, jaali arches, and chanderi silk accents throughout. The vibe is genuinely palatial — not a pastiche of one.

Why It Matters
This is an actual functioning royal palace, not a replica. Originally built as a guesthouse for a future King of England, it later served as a residence for the Scindia ruling family. The building retains a working rosewood elevator from 1930. Adjacent to Jai Vilas Palace and overlooking the Gwalior Fort — the only five-star hotel in the city with this level of institutional heritage.
Built in 1880 by HH Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia of the Maratha dynasty as a guest residence for the visiting Prince of Wales, this 144-year-old palace on nine acres sits right next to the Jai Vilas Palace. The Taj group took over management, and after an extensive restoration completed in 2024, it now has 50 rooms — a mix of suites, heritage rooms, and glamping-style luxury tents that overlook the Navtaal pool. You arrive in a ceremonial horse-drawn carriage. That tells you most of what you need to know.
