Tamao
French-Japanese minimalist. Warm, slow-living, eco-conscious. Feels like an apartment in a friend's courtyard, not a hotel. Adults-only (12+).

Why It Matters
One of very few chambre d'hôtes in Kyoto recognised by both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. The owners' lived experience in rural France — slow food, minimal waste, natural materials — is embedded in every corner of the property. Just seven groups per night, ever.
Tamao is a seven-unit chambre d'hôte on a quiet, narrow backstreet in central Kyoto, run by a family who spent years living in rural France before returning to open a guesthouse on their ancestral land. The traditional roof-tiled building and wood interiors blend right into the neighbourhood — this is Akezu Street, where locals still live, an Inaba Yakushido temple anchors the north end, and ordinary Kyoto life plays out around you. Rooms are more like compact two-storey apartments than hotel rooms, with floor heating, study nooks, garden-view bathtubs, and a French-Japanese design sensibility that feels considered rather than forced. There is no restaurant, no bar, no lobby to speak of — but there is a shared salon, a communal breakfast table, an on-site sauna, and a small gym across the street, all of which give it the intimacy of staying at a well-travelled friend's place.

How you'll actually spend your days.
As the light fades, guests gather in the shared salon for a complimentary aperitif. The owners and staff are present, making it a good time for neighbourhood restaurant tips and quiet conversation. Very much in the French chambre d'hôte tradition.
Kimono Kiccho sits directly across from Tamao and offers premium adult kimono rentals for men and women. Kimonos start at ¥16,500; lighter summer yukata at ¥13,200. A professional photographer photo shoot can also be arranged. Rentals are returned the next day. Tamao staff help with reservations.
Private 80-minute sauna booking for one person or a group (up to 4). Includes dry sauna, foot bath, multifunctional shower, relaxation space, and balcony. Reservation required.
The Valor fitness station is located across the street from Tamao and is free of charge for all Tamao guests. Bring your own workout clothes; towels, indoor shoes, and water bottles are provided.
