Terrace Midoubaru
Modern Japanese minimalism. Neutral tones, warm wood, tatami-meets-Western-bed rooms. Quiet and deliberately slow-paced. Adults only. The whole point is the onsen, the views, and a kaiseki dinner — not nightlife or activities.

Why It Matters
Only 14 rooms across 1,000 tsubo (over 3,300 sqm) of grounds — the space-to-room ratio is generous. Every room has its own private sulphur spring onsen fed from Horita Onsen. Nominated for the 2016 Kyushu Architecture Award. Listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Part of the Sekiya Resort family, with sister property Galleria Midobaru — one of Japan's most acclaimed art hotels — literally next door.
A 14-room adults-only modern ryokan on a forested hillside in Beppu's Hotta area, where every single room comes with a private semi-open-air sulphur onsen bath and a terrace looking straight out over Beppu Bay. The building was nominated for the 2016 Kyushu Architecture Award — clean-lined concrete and natural wood, nothing fussy — and sits within the Sekiya Resort group alongside the art-hotel Galleria Midobaru next door. It's on the Michelin and Tablet Hotels lists for good reason: this is a place that takes the classical ryokan formula seriously while refusing to look like one.
