Why It Matters

Historic building dating to the early 1700s with royal connections — Queen Victoria is said to have stayed here while Osborne House was being built. The Rock restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows jutting out over the bay, is genuinely one of the best-located dining rooms in the south of England. Only fully air-conditioned hotel on the Isle of Wight.

The Albion sits right on the seafront at Freshwater Bay, on the Isle of Wight's quieter western shore. After a £6 million refurbishment under new owners, it reopened as a 40-room boutique hotel that pays genuine respect to its Georgian and Victorian bones while offering properly modern comfort. Thirty-six of the 40 rooms look directly out to sea, and it's the only fully air-conditioned hotel on the island.
