The Alexander
Contemporary, art-forward boutique hotel with Midwestern warmth. Think gallery-meets-hotel rather than stuffy design showcase. Why It Matters
Indiana's first LEED Silver-certified hotel and the only IACC-certified hotel in the state. The art program — curated by the Indianapolis Museum of Art — is genuinely rare: 14 of the 26 artists with work here were commissioned to produce pieces site-specifically, including British graffiti artist Nick Walker in the parking garage and a stunning 11-by-9-foot installation made entirely from 3,840 black plastic combs. Named #4 Hotel in the Midwest in Condé Nast Traveler's 2022 Readers' Choice Awards.
The Alexander is Indianapolis's answer to the art hotel question — and a very good one. Opened in 2013 inside the CityWay development, the hotel was purpose-built around a $3 million art collection curated by staff from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, with 60 works spread across every public space, hallway, and guest room. The name itself is a nod to Alexander Ralston, the city planner who designed Indianapolis's street grid in 1820 — and the hotel's geometric logo is a literal simplification of that original plat map.

The hotel is directly connected to the Cultural Trail, an 8-mile urban trail linking downtown neighborhoods, public art installations, and the city's main cultural institutions. Walk, run, or borrow a hotel bike.
Over 60 works curated by the Indianapolis Museum of Art are displayed throughout the hotel — lobbies, hallways (each floor has a different piece by the elevator), and guest rooms. Fourteen artists were commissioned specifically for the hotel, including British graffiti artist Nick Walker in the parking garage, Sonya Clark's 'Madam C.J. Walker II' made from 3,840 black plastic combs, and Adam Cvijanovic's 'Ten Thousand Feet' depicting Indiana farmland from above. Didactic labels give the whole experience genuine museum weight.
