The Ampersand is a 111-room boutique hotel occupying an 1888 Victorian townhouse in South Kensington, right in London's museum district. Each room tier takes its design cue from a different cultural institution nearby: astronomy for the smallest rooms, music for Superior Rooms, ornithology for Deluxe Rooms, botany for Deluxe Studios, and geometry for the upper-floor Suites. It pulls off something genuinely hard: feeling both eccentrically British and completely unstuffy.

Deluxe Room
Ornithology is the theme here — feather wallpapers, ornithologically-inspired reading books, deep purple velvet headboards. The rooms feel properly spacious: a chaise longue at the foot of the bed, an opulent armchair in the corner, floor-to-ceiling windows. Double or king-size beds. Bathrooms offer either walk-in shower or bath/shower combination. The first room tier where cots and extra beds can be accommodated (children up to 12 at no charge).
Deluxe Studio
The botanical theme kicks in here with colourful cushions, floral wallpaper, and a royal blue velvet headboard that dominates the room. Designed for longer stays: a king-size bed, a separate sitting area with sofa, and a proper writing desk. Some studios have a TV above the bathtub; others have a freestanding bath in the bedroom itself. Quirky lamps and orchid arrangements complete the look. Good for anyone wanting something closer to an apartment feel.
Single & Small Double Room
The smallest rooms in the hotel, but not short on character. Astronomy is the design theme: intricate star-chart wallpaper, enormous velvet headboards. Small double beds, pillowy duvets, and an en suite bathroom with either a walk-in shower or bath/shower combination. The hotel itself recommends these for shorter stays since storage space is limited. Malin+Goetz toiletries, complimentary soft drinks from the minibar, and free WiFi included.
Suite
The largest rooms at the hotel, on the 4th and 5th floors, with geometry-inspired wallpapers and colourful velvet cushions. The headline feature is the floor-to-ceiling windows and balcony looking across the London skyline — the hotel calls them 'Mary Poppins views', and it's not an exaggeration. King-size bedroom, separate sitting room, kitchenette with microwave, and a freestanding bath with walk-in shower (or bath/shower combo). Bathroom TVs above the bath. Two suites can interconnect with adjacent Deluxe Rooms for families.
Superior Room
Music-inspired rooms with cappuccino-coloured velvet headboards and playful wallpaper. More generous than the entry-level rooms — comfortable for a weekend stay with a proper desk for anyone working. Double or twin configuration available on request. Modern en suite bathroom with walk-in shower or bath/shower combo. All the standard room inclusions: free WiFi, complimentary soft drinks, Malin+Goetz toiletries, LCD TV.
The Science Family Suite
Launching 6 June 2026, this new suite takes its inspiration from the neighbouring Science Museum. The children's room features a rocket-style bunk bed and celestial details. Interactive elements throughout. The adult bedroom is a more refined take on the space theme — rich textures, the signature Ampersand velvet headboard. Both rooms sit alongside each other with space for the whole family to spread out. En suite bathroom with shower and bath combination.
