The Artist Grand Hotel of Art
Contemporary art-hotel. Bold, design-forward, quietly sophisticated. Everything references art — from the Cross Check chairs (designed by Gehry himself, edited by Knoll) in the wellness area to the characteristic wood-panel doors that make every hallway feel like a gallery.
Book a Guggenheim-view room — the price premium is worth it, especially at dusk when the titanium changes color
Why It Matters
Opened in 2002 as Spain's first entirely author-designed hotel, created by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas. The only 5-star hotel directly facing the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.
Spain's first entirely author-designed hotel, The Artist sits dead opposite Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum — close enough that, legend has it, Frank Gehry had to grab the railing when he first stepped onto the rooftop and looked back at his own building. Designed in 2002 by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas, the interior reads like a curated museum of 20th-century furniture design: a reading corner stocked with architecture books, an Art Deco lobby bar channeling 1930s New York, and a kinetic installation by Swedish studio Humans Since 1982 ticking away in the atrium. The art doesn't stop at decoration — it's the whole point.
