The Carolina Inn
Historic Southern charm meets modern comfort. Think antique wood furnishings, chandelier lights, rich wood floors with floral rugs, four-poster beds, and framed photos of UNC alumni throughout. Elegant but not stuffy — this is very much a working university hotel that fills up with Tar Heel fans, visiting parents, and academic conferences.
Book months in advance for UNC football and basketball game weekends — the hotel sells out fast and applies a strict 60-day cancellation policy for those dates
Why It Matters
The only hotel on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. Built in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill and donated to UNC in 1935. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Has hosted President Obama, James Taylor, Andy Griffith, Yo-Yo Ma, and Branford Marsalis. Profits support the university library's North Carolina Collection.
The Carolina Inn is the only hotel on the University of North Carolina campus, and it's been there since 1924. The red brick Colonial Revival building, framed by magnolia trees and a courtyard, feels as embedded in campus life as the Old Well itself. Owned by UNC — with profits supporting the university library — it holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. No two of its 185 rooms look alike, the Crossroads restaurant is genuinely good, and the sense of place here is hard to fake.

A traditional afternoon tea service with a dedicated Tea Hostess. Available in the hotel lobby, dining room, or garden. A genuine Southern ritual — not a gimmick.
Recurring Friday evening event on the hotel's front porch. Open to the Chapel Hill community — this is a proper neighborhood event, not just a hotel amenity.
Seasonal outdoor parties on the Inn's grounds, open to the Chapel Hill community.
The Inn runs a year-round events calendar that includes live music performances. Community members and hotel guests both attend.
The UNC campus right outside the door is one of the nicest urban running environments in North Carolina. The campus loop is well-maintained, scenic, and hard to go wrong on.
Lush outdoor courtyards, elegant ballrooms, and the iconic black-and-white dance floor. Over 4,000 sq ft of indoor meeting space and 15,000+ sq ft of outdoor space. The hotel has built a strong local reputation for weddings and UNC alumni events.
