The Carpenter Hotel
Brutalist-meets-South-Austin: raw concrete, brick, cerulean-tiled bathrooms, colorful custom blankets, mid-century wood-and-leather furniture. Unpretentious and resolutely local. Feels like it belongs here.
The pool is open to non-guests via daily passes and a summer Swim Club membership — locals love this place as a neighborhood hang, not just a hotel.
Why It Matters
Adaptive reuse of the 1948 Carpenters Local 1266 Union Hall by Bunkhouse Hotels — the same group behind Hotel San José and Hotel Havana. Tablet Hotels member. The building's union-hall bones (original windows, bank windows, safe, wood veneer) were kept intact. Terra-cotta masonry sourced from historic D'Hanis, Texas. Bowling-alley banquettes were reproduced as seating in the hall. Open-air stairwells and hallways mean fresh air everywhere.
The Carpenter Hotel is built around a real piece of Austin history: the Carpenters Local 1266 Union Hall, a mid-century brick building from 1948 that now serves as the lobby, coffee bar, and restaurant. Behind it, a new Brutalist-inspired concrete-and-terracotta block rises through a grove of heritage pecan trees, lined with balconies that look down on the pool. All 93 rooms have private terraces. The location is absurdly good — Lady Bird Lake one block north, Zilker Park a short walk west, Barton Springs just beyond that.
