The Chanler is a Gilded Age mansion turned boutique hotel, sitting right at the start of Newport's famous 3.5-mile Cliff Walk. Built in 1870 by New York Congressman John Winthrop Chanler, it's now the only hotel in Newport with a Forbes Five Star and Michelin 2-Key designation. Twenty guest rooms and villas, each decorated in a completely different historical style — from Moroccan to Louis XVI to Colonial — share nothing but impeccable quality and views of the Atlantic.

Four spacious junior suite-scale rooms (except Georgian, which is a standard room) with California King or King beds. Most have ocean views. The Moroccan room is the standout: red and gold hues of Marrakesh, brass carvings, mother-of-pearl inlay, a stone fireplace, king bed, double Jacuzzi, vaulted ceilings, a step-down bathroom with skylight, and black fixtures. The Mediterranean brings sunny warmth; the Empire is formal and stately.
California King or King
Garden Villas (Briar Rose, English Trellis, Peonies & Ivy)
Three villas set within the private gardens of the house, reached through a private exterior entrance. Each has its own secluded courtyard with stone pathways, climbing greenery, and a private outdoor hot tub. English Trellis is the only room with two queen-sized full-canopied iron beds. Quieter than the Ocean Villas, with a tucked-away garden-estate feel.
Manor Rooms (Colonial, Greek Revival, Federal, Williamsburg, Victorian, French Provincial)
Six rooms that are the entry point at The Chanler — but 'entry point' at this property still means gas fireplaces, Natura Bissé bath amenities, heated bathroom floors, and custom decor. Queen beds, distinctive period themes, and antiques throughout. Smaller than Estate and Signature rooms; some are garden-facing. The most accessible price tier in the house.
QueenOcean Villas (Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Nantucket)
Three villas inspired by New England's most iconic islands, each with a private exterior entrance, courtyard garden, private outdoor hot tub, sauna, and a private upper deck overlooking Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean. French doors and windows face Easton's Beach. The most dramatic accommodations on the property.
Signature Rooms (Regency, Louis XVI, Renaissance, English Tudor)
Four rooms shaped by European design traditions — Louis XVI in soft blues and creams with hand-painted leaf and ribbon designs; English Tudor with carved woodwork, traditional linen-fold oak panels, and handcrafted stucco walls; Renaissance with a grand chandelier and ornate finishes; Regency with decor inspired by the Georgian kings. Generous in scale and deeply intimate, with ocean views in select rooms.
