The Charleston Place
Grand Southern institution with a modern editorial edge. Think stately lobby with deep armchairs, live piano in the bar most evenings, and service that actually remembers your name. It's formal without being stuffy — the kind of hotel where locals go for Sunday brunch just as much as out-of-towners go for the full stay.
Ask about the Club Level even if you originally booked a standard room — upgrades sometimes land for free, and the all-day food and drinks in the private lounge are a genuine value-add
Why It Matters
Originally called 'Riley's Folly' by skeptics (it was Mayor Joe Riley's audacious bet on Charleston's revival), it became the catalyst that turned the historic district into a genuine travel destination. Named to Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List in 2024. It's the only hotel in Charleston with a Club Level private lounge, a rooftop saltwater pool (currently being reimagined), and a Daniel Humm residency.
The Charleston Place is the grande dame of Charleston hotels — a 433-room landmark that's been the social heart of the city since 1986. It spans nearly a full city block on Meeting Street, right at the edge of the City Market, with Italian marble bathrooms, a Club Level on the upper floors, and a dining lineup that now includes a year-long pop-up from Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park fame. Local ownership group Beemok Hospitality Collection (BHC) acquired it in 2022 and is in the middle of a $250+ million renovation that's refreshing everything from the rooms to the rooftop.
