The Convent Boutique Hotel
Playfully irreverent heritage conversion. The building does most of the heavy lifting on atmosphere — the staff are genuinely enthusiastic about their city, the religious theme is decorative rather than solemn, and the whole place has the feel of a well-curated neighborhood secret rather than a polished hotel product.

Why It Matters
One of the very few hotels in Auckland that genuinely earns the word unique. A 100-year-old Spanish Mission–style convent with an acclaimed Italian-influenced restaurant under the original glass cloister ceiling, listed by Tablet Hotels and featured in the Michelin Guide. Only 22 rooms, free parking, and rooms starting from NZD $209.
A century-old Spanish Mission–style convent in Grey Lynn — all stucco arches, ornate vaulted ceilings, and vast steel windows — that's been preserved and converted into a 22-room boutique hotel. The rooms lean hard into the building's past with names like Nuns Repose, Mother Superior, and The Sacristy. Style is eclectic: weathered surfaces, a mix of modernist and vintage furniture, and just enough religious iconography to feel deliberate rather than kitschy. Ada restaurant occupies the old cloisters under a glass ceiling and pulls in non-guests with its Italian-influenced New Zealand seasonal cooking.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The House Bar's batched Negroni in the late afternoon sun is practically a hotel institution. Campari, gin, sweet vermouth — served bottled on the sun-soaked balcony by the Ada bartender.
The hotel's location in Grey Lynn is the activity. Staff are passionate about the city and actively share local recommendations — from the best brunch spots to where to grab fish and chips. Ponsonby Road is a 10-minute walk; the local strip has cafes, boutiques, vegan eateries, and bars. Eden Park is within walking distance.
