The Dewberry
Mid-century modern meets old-money Southern restraint. Think credenzas, reading lamps, and handcrafted wooden bowls made from a 150-year-old oak tree — not gilded excess. Every detail feels intentional rather than performative.
Corner rooms (Charleston Flats) have the best panoramic city views — worth the upgrade
Why It Matters
Named Virtuoso's Best Independent Hotel in the World for 2025. Awarded a Michelin Key in 2024. Member of Historic Hotels of America. The Citrus Club rooftop is the highest publicly accessible point in Charleston. The cocktail program at The Living Room has earned James Beard Award nominations.
The Dewberry opened in 2016 inside the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building — a 1964 Brutalist landmark that sat mostly dormant for years after Hurricane Floyd. Atlanta developer John Dewberry spent eight years transforming it, keeping the mid-century bones intact while layering in custom Stickley armoires, Danby Vermont marble baths, unlacquered brass fixtures, and mohair fabrics. The result is a precisely calibrated luxury: restrained, personal, very Charleston. No pool, no sprawling resort infrastructure — instead you get what is reputedly the highest rooftop bar in the city, a nationally celebrated cocktail program, and a concierge team that addresses every guest by name.
