The Durham Hotel
Mad Men-era mid-century modern with genuine local character. Custom geometric carpets, Moroccan tile at the entrance, chandeliers inspired by the Okura Hotel Tokyo, Raleigh Denim blankets on every bed. Feels designed, not decorated.
Book the Penthouse only if you plan to actually use the private terrace — at ~$725/night it's a premium worth weighing
Why It Matters
The only independent downtown Durham hotel, housed in a genuine piece of mid-century architecture with interiors by Commune Design. The rooftop bar offers some of the best sunset views in the city. Deeply embedded in the local community — from Counter Culture Coffee service to a permanent Liberation Station Black Lit Library in the lobby newsstand.
The Durham is the only independently owned and locally operated downtown Durham hotel — 53 rooms inside a landmark 1968 mid-century modern building that was originally the Home Savings and Loan Association headquarters. Raleigh-based Maurer Architecture and LA interior firm Commune Design (yes, the Ace Hotel people) renovated it in 2015, keeping the original gold-accented facade intact and turning the cavernous retail bank floor into a two-story dining room. The original bank vault door still anchors the main level bar. It has been covered by the New York Times, Southern Living, and Architectural Digest — and earns every mention.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Durham runs a regular slate of community-oriented events in both the Coffee Bar and on the Roof — puzzle swaps, family-style suppers, author readings, children's storytimes, and stargazing nights. Events calendar on the website.
A permanent installation in the hotel's lobby newsstand featuring children's books highlighting characters of color. Guests and visitors can choose a book and read in the lobby lounge area. A small but genuinely thoughtful touch.
Regular live music events curated by well-known Durham jazz musician Al Strong. Primarily on The Roof, year-round. Open to hotel guests and the public.
Complimentary yoga sessions held on The Roof for hotel guests, schedule-dependent. Check the events calendar on the website before your stay to confirm availability.
