Why It Matters

Owned by the Wirths of Hauser & Wirth, one of the world's most prestigious commercial galleries. The hotel holds two Michelin Keys, is a Category B listed building, and sits close to Balmoral. More than 16,000 artworks and antiques are integrated into every room. Seven distinct room categories — from 19sqm Croft cabins to 57sqm Royal Suites — each tell a specific story about Braemar, Scotland, or a notable historical figure.

A five-star Victorian coaching inn in Braemar, deep in the Cairngorms National Park, owned and restored by Swiss gallerists Manuela and Iwan Wirth — co-founders of Hauser & Wirth. Reopened in 2018 after a loving transformation, the 47-room hotel holds over 16,000 artworks and antiques threaded through every corridor, bedroom, and bar. It's equal parts country house, gallery, and pub: a place where you come in from a Munro hike and find a Lucian Freud hanging in the lobby.

Where You'll Stay

8 room types available

'Secret' Room
standard

'Secret' Room

Hidden behind a trompe-l'œil door and dedicated to Coco Chanel, who had a long relationship with Scotland through her affair with the 2nd Duke of Westminster. Tweeds, Fair Isle knits, quilted fabrics, and Scottish chinoiserie painted panels throughout. The freestanding copper bath is inside the room itself — not in a separate bathroom. Art Deco influences mixed with Scottish craft.

Artist's Studio

Artist's Studio

A one-off room paying tribute to the Bloomsbury Group — specifically Duncan Grant, who was born nearby in Aviemore. Every surface is a canvas: hand-painted walls, doors, furniture, and a decorated cabin bed. Art-directed by Neil Wenman, partner at Hauser & Wirth. Deliberately feels like a working studio. Not for those who prefer clean lines.

Croft Rooms

Inspired by traditional Scottish croft houses, they feature hand-painted cabin beds — each individually decorated by artists with scenes of Highland landscapes, cattle, pheasants, and stags. Cosy and charming, but genuinely compact. Fine for a solo traveller; snug for two.
