The Greenhouse Hotel
Eco-conscious, lively, and unpretentious. This is not a hushed luxury hotel — the food hall buzzes and there's live music at the bar. Rooms are compact but thoughtfully done: locally made ceramics, Sóley organic toiletries, and real mountain views from every window.
Book the suite on the top floor — it's 34 sqm with a private outdoor area and the best mountain views in the house.
Why It Matters
Listed in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, this is the only hotel in Iceland that doubles as a fully operational food market, street food hall, and Icelandic design shopping center — all in one building. The tech-forward self check-in (unique door code sent by email) and in-room QR ordering system are genuinely slick for the price point. The hotel also owns the Reykjadalur Lodge, a striking black pavilion at the foot of the hot spring hiking trail.
Opened in late 2021, The Greenhouse Hotel (Gróðurhúsið in Icelandic) is a 49-room boutique property sitting at the entrance of geothermally active Hveragerði, about 40 minutes south of Reykjavík. The building is a modern, utilitarian structure brought to life by Icelandic production designer Hálfdan Pedersen — think lush indoor plants everywhere, recycled furniture, and a ground-floor food hall with seven restaurants, a colonial-style cocktail bar, and Icelandic designer shops all under one roof. Every room is on the upper floors and faces the mountains.
