Why It Matters
One of very few properties in Japan pairing a serious fine-dining Italian/French restaurant with private onsen access in every room. Founder Hiroyuki Hiramatsu spent over 35 years building a celebrated restaurant empire before importing the French auberge model to Japan. The property holds One MICHELIN Key for 2024 and 2025 consecutively, and has been recognized by National Geographic Traveller (UK) for excellence in wellness travel.
A 20-room boutique hotel in Hakone's Sengokuhara district built squarely around the French auberge concept — the restaurant is the anchor, and the rooms exist so you don't have to rush home after dinner. Every room has a private hot spring bath fed continuously by the nearby Shin-Ubako spring, and the on-site Italian/French restaurant has earned consecutive One MICHELIN Key recognition. The art collection alone is worth the trip: roughly 100 works by Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Yayoi Kusama, and Tamako Kataoka hang throughout the property.
