The Holbrooke Hotel
Gold Rush-era boutique with a masculine, frontier-meets-refined aesthetic. Raw brick, stone walls, wood ceilings, taxidermy, globe chandeliers — but also Italian linens, Mascioni robes, and locally roasted coffee. The vibe skews rugged and storied rather than precious.
Request a room in the main Holbrooke building if the historic atmosphere is your priority — the Purcell Carriage House has thinner walls and a different vibe.
Why It Matters
California's oldest continuously operating hotel and a California State Landmark. The Golden Gate Saloon is touted as the longest continuously operating bar room west of the Mississippi (since 1852). Past guests include Mark Twain, Lola Montez, outlaw Black Bart, and four U.S. presidents: Grant, Cleveland, Garfield, and Harrison. Certain rooms (notably 2, 5, 9, 15) are said to be haunted.
Built in 1862 and on-site since California's Gold Rush, the Holbrooke is the state's longest continuously operating hotel — a California Historical Landmark that reopened after a rigorous 18-month renovation in January 2021. The 28 rooms span the original brick-and-fieldstone hotel and the adjacent Purcell Carriage House, mixing Victorian personality (clawfoot tubs, exposed brick, antiques) with genuinely modern comforts. Deliberately no TVs. Two drinking destinations anchor the property: the Golden Gate Saloon, a chef-driven restaurant and bar operating since 1852, and the Iron Door, a speakeasy-style cellar lounge with a historically colorful past.

How you'll actually spend your days.
California's richest gold mine is 1.5 miles from the hotel — an easy drive or bike ride. The park includes mine shafts, Victorian gardens, and the owner's 'cottage' (it's a mansion).
An in-hotel shop selling home goods, gifts, and accessories. Located inside the Holbrooke, good for picking up locally made items without leaving the property.
Seasonal ghost tours run around Halloween at both the Holbrooke and the neighboring National Exchange Hotel. Several rooms (notably 2, 5, 9, 15) have documented 'unusual occurrences' per paranormal researchers. The hotel is consistently listed among America's best haunted hotels.
Riverside hikes along Buttermilk Bend are easily accessed from town. The broader Sierra Nevada foothills offer hiking, biking, swimming, boating, and cross-country skiing at Royal Gorge in season.
Periodic live music performances in the cellar speakeasy bar. Schedule varies seasonally.
Lucchesi Winery has a tasting room on Mill Street, steps from the hotel, where guests can sample local Gold Country wines from their 20-acre vineyard.
