Why It Matters

AA 2 Rosettes and an AA Breakfast Award 2025 in a village so small it had eight households recorded in the Domesday Book. Featured in Conde Nast Traveller. The kitchen garden and poly tunnel supply almost everything on the plate — including the mint in the homemade ice cream. Homemade gins and vodkas are infused with garden ingredients too.

A 17th-century Grade II listed inn sitting at the highest point of Holcombe village in the Mendip Hills. Owners Alan and Caroline — both trained chefs who left 30 years of London catering behind when they bought the place in November 2019 — grow produce in raised beds and a poly tunnel, then turn it into AA 2-Rosette cooking the same evening. Eleven rooms split between the main house and three grounds-level lodges. The restaurant is open to non-guests Wednesday to Sunday. No pool, no spa, no gym. The draw is the food and the Somerset hills rolling away outside the window.
