The Holcombe
Contemporary British country inn with a serious garden-to-table kitchen at its core. Rustic stone walls and roll top baths sit alongside hand-blocked headboards and merino throws sourced from British designers. Warm and owner-led — the kind of place where Alan comes out of the kitchen to check you're happy with your venison.

Why It Matters
AA 2 Rosettes and an AA Breakfast Award 2025 in a village so small it had eight households recorded in the Domesday Book. Featured in Conde Nast Traveller. The kitchen garden and poly tunnel supply almost everything on the plate — including the mint in the homemade ice cream. Homemade gins and vodkas are infused with garden ingredients too.
A 17th-century Grade II listed inn sitting at the highest point of Holcombe village in the Mendip Hills. Owners Alan and Caroline — both trained chefs who left 30 years of London catering behind when they bought the place in November 2019 — grow produce in raised beds and a poly tunnel, then turn it into AA 2-Rosette cooking the same evening. Eleven rooms split between the main house and three grounds-level lodges. The restaurant is open to non-guests Wednesday to Sunday. No pool, no spa, no gym. The draw is the food and the Somerset hills rolling away outside the window.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Public footpaths run through the surrounding fields directly from the hotel. The Mendip Hills offer well-marked walking routes. Dogs are very welcome — the hotel's own dog, Truffle, roams the grounds.
Guests can walk around the working kitchen garden and poly tunnel that supplies the restaurant. The garden is a genuine working space — raised beds, seasonal produce, and the source of much of what ends up on your plate. A nice thing to do before dinner.
An all-weather tennis court is available less than 5 minutes from the hotel for £15 per hour. Individual and group coaching is offered by an LTA Level 3 Accredited Plus coach at £30 per hour for up to 4 people. Guests must bring their own equipment and appropriate tennis footwear.
