Why It Matters
One of California's oldest continuously operating hospitality venues, reopened in 2023 under Auberge after an extensive renovation. The five-venue dining program anchored by The Tavern is a genuine destination in its own right. The iconic white water tower still watches over the property. Lavender Barn spa, with its signature outdoor soaking tubs and cold plunge, opened in December 2024.
This 6.5-acre property in the middle of Los Olivos has been welcoming travelers since 1886, first as a stagecoach stop, later as a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and now as Auberge's flagship California wine-country resort. Design firm AvroKO sensitively restored four original cottages — wooden floors, clawfoot tubs, and all — while adding new white clapboard guesthouses that somehow don't look out of place. The result is 67 rooms with a genuinely historic heart and all the modern Auberge creature comforts layered on top.

Balcony King Studio
Second-floor unit in the guesthouses with a large private balcony featuring lounge chairs and an outdoor fireplace. Airy and bright with white clapboard walls, local artwork, and the same high-quality bedding and finishes throughout. Great perch for a glass of local pinot at sunset.
KingCypress Cottage
One of the four original 1886 structures, painstakingly restored. This is the real deal: exposed wooden beams, warm wood floors, a clawfoot soaking tub, restored wainscoting, and unlacquered brass fixtures. Private porch with rocking chairs, garden patio with lounge seating, and a fire pit. The fireplace mantel is made from the original railroad ties that ran alongside the property.
KingGarden Terrace Studio
Ground-floor studio with a choice of king or two queen beds — the twin-queen layout is good for families or friend groups. Vaulted ceilings, a generous private garden terrace with lounge seating. Fire pit on the terrace makes for the ideal s'mores setup after dinner.
King or Two QueensHomestead Cottage
A two-bedroom version of the historic cottages. The main bedroom has a king bed, a separate seating room with indoor fireplace, and a bathroom with a clawfoot soaking tub. A second bedroom offers two double beds, an entry porch with rocking chairs, its own indoor fireplace, and a walk-in shower bathroom. Private garden patio with lounge seating and fire pit out front.

Inspired by Mattei's original homesteads, this one-bedroom suite has a king bedroom with a separate seating room warmed by an indoor fireplace. The private garden patio has lounge seating and an outdoor fire pit. A step up in space and privacy from the studios.

Second-story airy clapboard studio with a king bedroom, chaise lounge sitting area, and a private terrace with outdoor fireplace. Clean, crisp design with local artwork and the signature railroad-tie fireplace mantel detail.

Ground-floor room in one of the new white clapboard guesthouses. High ceilings, four-poster king bed with layers of silky-soft bedding, woven textiles, wainscoting, exposed beams, and woolen rugs.
